Telekom wants to close almost a hundred shops by the end of 2021 due to the “online boom”. Around 800 employees are made redundant.
There are said to be several Telekom contact points in cities
More and more people are concluding mobile phone contracts on the Internet. Deutsche Telekom is also feeling this and is therefore turning to red pencil. A total of 99 of the 504 own Telekom shops are to be closed by the end of 2021. There are also franchise branches and partner shops that offer telecom products. There are several contact points in many cities that no longer have enough customers, said a spokesman. The closings are spread across the whole of Germany.
Operational layoffs should be excluded until the end of the restructuring – instead, the jobs should be saved through severance payments, partial retirement or switching to other jobs in the group. The Verdi union, which was involved in making the renovation as socially acceptable as possible, welcomed the agreement. According to Telekom, 86 percent of customers will continue to have a Telekom shop within 20 kilometers. In addition, the interaction between stationary and digital sales channels is to be improved.
